67 Ways to Give Back This Mandela Day

Every year on 18 July, South Africans pause to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela — and more importantly, to act.

Mandela Day is built on one simple idea: 67 minutes of your time, in honour of the 67 years Madiba devoted to public service. This year, we’re asking: what if that change started right at home?

Start Small, Start Local

You don’t need to organise a mass event or donate large sums to make a difference. Some of the most meaningful acts of service happen quietly, in the buildings and streets where we live and work every day.

Here are a few ideas to get you started this Mandela Day:

  • Knock on your neighbour’s door — especially the elderly — and check in.
  • Organise a food parcel drive in your building’s foyer and donate to a nearby shelter.
  • Pick up litter in your street or common areas for 67 minutes — make it a group effort.
  • Donate clothing you no longer wear to a local charity collection point.
  • Offer to read to children at a nearby crèche or community centre.
  • Support a local small business or street vendor — even just buying your morning coffee there counts.

Community Starts in Your Building

At City Property, we believe that good communities are built — not born. Whether you’re renting a flat in the Joburg CBD or running a business from one of our commercial spaces in Pretoria, you’re part of a wider neighbourhood that benefits when people show up for each other.

This Mandela Day, we encourage all our tenants to use their 67 minutes thoughtfully. The smallest gesture — a warm meal shared, a kind word offered, a space cleaned up — ripples outward in ways you may never fully see.

Find a Cause Near You

Not sure where to start? The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s website lists registered volunteer opportunities across South Africa. Or check in with your local community groups, chances are, there’s already something happening close to home.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

At City Property, we believe that education changes lives — but children cannot learn when they are hungry.

This Mandela Day, our staff will pack our millionth meal in partnership with Rise Against Hunger Africa, marking a significant milestone in a journey that has spanned several years.

Follow our social channels to learn more and see how our team is making their 67 minutes count.

Happy Mandela Day. 💛
