Women Who Lead: Spotlighting Female Professionals in Joburg & Pretoria

Celebrating International Women’s Day – 8 March

International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a reminder of the resilience, courage and impact women have across every sector of society. From boardrooms to startups, and communities to innovation hubs, South African women are leading with purpose and power.

This year, we’re spotlighting inspirational Black female entrepreneurs and CEOs who are driving change right here in Johannesburg and Pretoria — and influencing the future of business, tech and beyond.

Serisha Barrat – Tech Trailblazer & Founder (Johannesburg)

One of South Africa’s rising stars in tech entrepreneurship is Serisha Barrat — co-founder and CEO of Lawyered Up, an AI-powered legal tech platform that’s changing how small and medium businesses access legal services. Barrat, just 30, has built a business that uses technology to simplify legal processes and boost access for SMEs, breaking down barriers that have historically held smaller ventures back. Her leadership is rooted in innovation and social impact, and Lawyered Up’s team is majority women-led — a powerful example of female representation in tech. She’s been recognised as one of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans and has spoken internationally on technology and ethics.

Rose Nthabiseng Tsenase – Construction & Innovation Leader (Pretoria)

Another powerful example of female leadership is Rose Nthabiseng Tsenase, founder and CEO of Bashoeshoe Construction. Tsenase spotted a gap in the construction industry for quality and affordable building solutions, and over the years has driven the company to deliver over 650 project designs — spanning crane hire, project management, civil works and more. Her work not only contributes to the built environment in our cities but also helps address South Africa’s housing and infrastructure needs with forward-thinking, practical solutions.

Why Representation Matters

Women like Serisha and Rose aren’t just successful business leaders — they’re role models showing what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. Their journeys encourage young women in Johannesburg, Pretoria and beyond to dream bigger, build smarter, and lead boldly.

At a time when entrepreneurship and innovation are reshaping our economy, supporting women-led businesses enriches our communities, creates jobs and inspires the next generation of leaders.

Looking Ahead

This International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate South African women who lead, innovate and empower — and commit to fostering environments where more women can thrive.
