Keeping more than hope alive

Every child deserves the chance to dream, to play, and to imagine a bright future.

Yet for too many families, those dreams are interrupted by a diagnosis no parent ever wants to hear:  childhood cancer.

At City Property, children hold a special place in our hearts.  Many of our community projects are centred on giving kids the opportunity to live fuller, healthier lives.  And when it comes to cancer, we believe that awareness, support, and early action can help keep more than just hope alive.

Inspired by Madiba’s words

Nelson Mandela once said, “Our children are our greatest treasure.  They are our future.”  These words inspire us to act — to make sure that every child has the chance to step into that future with strength and possibility.

This is why, for many years, we’ve been proud supporters of CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa).  Each September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we join hands with CHOC to shine a light on this important cause.

Why awareness matters

It’s a sobering reality: 1 in 408 children worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 15.  But there is hope — with early detection and specialised treatment, survival rates can improve.

Often, it’s the small signs that matter most.  A white spot in the eye, an unexplained fever, or sudden weight loss might seem minor at first, but recognising these signals early can change the course of a child’s life.

That’s why CHOC promotes the SILUAN early warning signs — a simple guide that empowers parents, caregivers, and communities to take action when something feels wrong.  You can download the SILUAN guide here to keep it close at hand.

Standing by families

Beyond awareness, CHOC walks alongside families every step of the way.  They provide practical, emotional, and financial support to children, parents, and caregivers facing one of life’s toughest battles.  From a warm meal during hospital stays, to a comforting word in the hardest moments, CHOC reminds families that they are not alone.

For us at City Property, supporting CHOC is about more than corporate responsibility — it’s about standing with children and families when they need it most.  It’s about reminding them that their courage is seen, their battles are shared, and that together we can keep more than hope alive.
