This month, we celebrate and honour the exceptional women at City Property who are breaking barriers with their diverse talents, passion, and dedication.
Across our company, many women are making a difference in various roles. Some are in more traditional positions, while others excel in technical fields—managing renovation projects, tenant installations, working as engineers, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. They build relationships with tenants and propel the company forward through innovation and special projects.
Here are the stories of three inspirational women breaking barriers in male-dominated professions.
Patricia Vilakazi: The Building Manager Extraordinaire
Thrown into the deep end of property management, Patricia has excelled at overcoming operational challenges at a commercial property. Building relationships with taxi operators, hawkers, and security and cleaning suppliers comes naturally to her.
Her hard work and ability to challenge the status quo have transformed the area around the property. Stakeholders now work hand-in-hand, recognising the role everyone plays in maintaining a safe and clean environment ready for business. Known fondly as “Mama Patricia” by the taxi owners, she embodies patience and perseverance.
Patricia began her journey in 1992 at Centre Forum, long before the property was acquired by City Property. Today, she manages Steynscor, Provincial House and Scott’s Corner.
Penny Kekane: The Trailblazing Electrical Engineer
As a young girl, Penny Kekane was fascinated by her father’s career as an electrician. Despite his initial doubts, she pursued a course in electrical engineering in Grade 7, captivated by how electricity powers a home.
In a predominantly male industry, Penny has turned her dream into reality. Now, her father is her proudest supporter, and they connect daily over their shared passion.
Penny works with two colleagues in the electrical department, troubleshooting problems and ideas. She emphasises the importance of safety, especially when dealing with older properties. Despite facing scepticism on-site, Penny consistently proves her capabilities by getting the job done right the first time.
Her message to others is clear: pursue your dreams, break barriers, and never stop believing in yourself.
Milly Ramokolo: The Passionate Plumber
Although new to the City Property team, Milly Ramokolo discovered her passion for hands-on work during the pandemic, after eight years in administration. Now a handywoman at residential buildings in Johannesburg, Milly is completing her apprenticeship as a plumber.
Milly finds joy in solving challenging plumbing problems and enjoys painting as part of finishing off a plumbling job. Despite the occasional oversight from male counterparts, she believes women should learn technical skills, as there are many opportunities available.
Milly dreams of travelling the world, but until then, she encourages all women to go out, show themselves, and be different.
This Women’s Month, we celebrate these remarkable women and their contributions to City Property. Their stories inspire us all to break barriers and pursue our dreams without limits.
