Keeping mould at bay

During the cold winter months, we tend to spend more time indoors, with windows and doors closed and the heater on to keep our apartments cosy and warm.

Often the cold air meets other cold surfaces such as walls, windows or mirrors in our warmer apartments and the moisture condenses into water droplets, known as condensation. Mould may occur because of condensation, poor ventilation and water leaks.

Mould is one of the most common challenges faced by tenants and areas such as bathrooms and kitchens are particularly prone to it.

These micro fungi intruders will not only ruin your stylish apartment, but also pose potential health risks if left unchecked. Mould can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory problems and aggravate conditions like asthma.

If you notice mould in your apartment, taking swift action can prevent its spread and recurrence. Here’s how to effectively tackle the issue:

  • Identify and fix the source: Address any leaks or sources of moisture that are contributing to the mould growth. Report leaking pipes, roofs, or windows to your building manager.
  • Clean thoroughly: Regularly clean and inspect areas prone to mould, such as bathroom tiles, ceilings and windowsills. Use a mixture of water and detergent to scrub mould off hard surfaces and for more stubborn mould, a solution of bleach and water (1:9 ratio) can be effective. Please ensure proper ventilation and protective gear during use.
  • Dry and ventilate: Improve airflow and ventilation in your apartment by opening your windows when weather permits and by not leaving damp clothes indoors to dry. Rather leave your clothes on the clothesline or tumble dry it at one of our convenient Wash Bars.

By promptly addressing sources of moisture, cleaning affected areas, and improving ventilation, you can create a healthier and more comfortable living environment for yourself and your family.

Remember, prevention and early intervention are key to keeping mould at bay, while your apartment remains a safe and inviting place to call home.
